Panic attacks (also known as anxiety attacks), are at the most basic level a reaction to fear. A fear without cause or reason. A panic attack symptom can appear suddenly with any number of physical symptoms including a racing heart, tightness in the chest, shortness of breath, nausea, and numbness in parts of the body to name a few. A panic attack symptom isn’t just confined to physical symptoms but mental as well with feelings of a dreamlike state.

When most people encounter something dangerous it triggers in our mind the feelings of fear. This fear helps us to be cautious in such situations but for a panic attack sufferer the panic attack symptom is triggered seemingly at random without a direct cause. Because of this, when someone sufferers from an attack for the first time they feel like they are dying from a sudden heart attack. After the first attack two things begin to happen to the sufferer. One they may start to avoid places or situations that they believe are the cause of the panic attack symptom. Secondly, they develop an intense fear of the next unknown attack. If this process of avoidance and fear of attacks becomes a pattern then it is said that a person is suffering from a panic disorder.

What defines panic attacks from other forms of anxiety disorders is the suddenness and unexpectedness of a panic attack symptom. Usually their first experience occurs in a persons late teens. The havoc attacks can cause is tremendous and may cause great difficulty in daily life. Also it may not happen during the day, some attacks occur during sleep waking the sufferer abruptly in midst of an attack. Sleep panic attacks are especially dangerous because they may cause a phobia of sleeping which can cause many health problems.
